Onboarding Remotely: Kasper's Story

Our newest recruit, Kasper, joined Plan Brothers almost completely remotely. His first months have also continued in the same fashion because of the remote work recommendations caused by COVID-19.

Kasper is responsible for the success of our customers. In a nutshell, he looks after our customers to make sure they get the most out of our products and services.

A Remote Start To A New Job
 

Kasper’s job interviews and contract had been finalised before the coronavirus lockdown took place. However, already part of the interview process was successfully conducted remotely as a video interview.

Coincidentally, Kasper got to meet the team during a recreational cottage weekend before he started to work. The weekend gave him understanding on what the atmosphere and the people in the company are like. He officially started working one week after lockdowns were put in place.

Onboarding and learning the job happened completely through virtual platforms. The new situation did not frighten Kasper nor the team that was already used to remote work due to our company culture, which already supported the flexibility of work. Home readings and frequent one-to-one and team online meetings familiarised Kasper with the job and the work setting.

“Despite the remote onboarding not being optimal, the wonders of modern technology afforded me the ability to become familiar with the work setting, the culture and new colleagues through a computer screen. The challenges I’ve faced these past few months have also been greatly mitigated by the very helpful and friendly bunch of co-workers that I’ve gotten to know,” Kasper describes.

Mentor For Onboarding
 

When starting a new job it helps to have a mentor who has the understanding on the full workload given to a new employee. Especially remotely the company culture is not transmitted so explicitly. If tasks come from multiple sources there is a risk that a heavy workload can become a burden. Frequent and open communication avoided a work overload from happening during the remote onboarding process.

Technology allows getting to know the culture and colleagues through the computer screen, but Kasper, along with other team members, cannot wait to meet face-to-face at the office. Kasper is eagerly still waiting to experience the first “typical work day” and be physically surrounded by his new Plan Brothers family.

Conclusion
 

In normal circumstances we still foster having a physical office space that allows meeting and exchanging thoughts face to face with our colleagues. Nevertheless, the remote onboarding ended up being a successful experience for all parties.
